GOP candidate takes hard stance with Seneca Nation over taxes

A Republican candidate for governor of New York said he will stand up to the Seneca Nationon tobacco taxation.

Carl P. Paladino said he wouldn't be afraid to force the tribe to pay the state's tax. "The fact that the past three governors have neglected to go up and enforce the law because they're afraid of somebody standing on top of a police car or they're afraid of somebody burning some tires in the street, that's not me," he said at an event in Niagara Falls, The Buffalo News reported.

"Let one of them stand on top of a police car in my administration; it would be the last time they stood on top of a police car," Paladino added.

The state and federal courts have temporarily blocked the state from imposing the tax on the Seneca Nation pending the resolution of two lawsuits.
