Native leaders in Washington and in British Columbia, Canada, are calling for an inquiry into the fatal shooting of a traditional carver by a police officer in Seattle.
John T. Williams, a member of the
Dididaht First Nation, belonged to
The Chief Seattle Club. Leaders there called on the city to create an inquest panel with at least one Native member and they said the police sergeant should apologize for comments he made about Williams.
“This tragedy never should have happened,” Jenine Grey told Indian Country Today. “We are angry and outraged that his life was interrupted for seemingly no reason, and so callously disregarded.”
A public viewing is taking place this evening for Williams.
