Picuris Pueblo sues to stop mining of sacred site
Monday, February 23, 2004

Picuris Pueblo in New Mexico filed a lawsuit in state court to stop a mining company from destroying a sacred site.

The tribe uses the site to gather clay for pottery and to gather medicinal plants. The lawsuit asserts title to the site and seeks money for damages to the land.

The tribe has fought the mica mine for several years. The state approved a 20-year, 80-acre expansion.
