Democrat chides Campbell for being 1/16th Indian
Monday, March 1, 2004

A Democrat in Colorado says Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) has gotten "a lot of mileage out of being 1-16th Indian."

State Sen. Ken Gordon took a shot at Campbell, whose office is being investigated for an alleged kickback taken by his former chief of staff. Gordon said he "never understood why the people of Colorado think he's a good person to have in the Senate.."

"Maybe we should find someone who is one-eighth Indian. That's twice as much as Sen. Campbell," Gordon said, according to The Denver Post.

Campbell, a Republican, is up for re-election this year. Rutt Bridges, an entrepreneur, announced his bid for the Democratic nomination on Sunday. "We all like Ben Campbell - we just can't afford him," he was quoted as saying, referring to Colorado's loss in federal funds since Campbell entered office.
