Aquash to be reburied on home reserve in Canada

American Indian Movement activist Anna Mae Pictou Aquash will be reburied on her home reserve in Canada.

Aquash was born on the Mi'kmaq Shubenacadie Reserve in Nova Scotia. Her family exhumed her body from a cemetery on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota yesterday.

The family acted, in part, after hearing that AIM leader Vernon Bellecourt was planning to give a speech at Aquash's grave. Bellecourt denies any involvement in her death. The family says it is turning a transcript of Bellecourt in which he allegedly claims to identify the three people who responsible for the murder.

A federal judge convicted Arlo Looking Cloud of Aquash's murder. A second man, John Graham of Canada, is fighting extradition. A third woman alleged to be involved, Theda Clarke, is elderly and in a retirement home in rural Nebraska.

Looking Cloud will be sentenced today. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in federal prison.
