Chumash Tribe's land-into-trust request opposed

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place 6.9 acres into trust.
The California tribe plans to use the land fro a 41,925-square-foot, two-story museum, cultural center and gift shop. The land is located across from the tribe's casino.
Local activists oppose the request. They say they weren't informed of the tribe's plans.
The BIA says it doesn't have to notify anyone until a final decision has been made. The public has until May 24 to comment on the draft environmental assessment for the museum project.
