Police tensions continue at Mohawk First Nation
Friday, May 7, 2004

The exiled chief of the Kanesatake Mohawk First Nation of Quebec has asked federal law enforcement to patrol the community.

Grand Chief James Gabriel says he was forced to act because his own police force has been forced out. Opponents have been critical of Gabriel's handling of law enforcement on the reserve.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police began patrolling yesterday. A rival chief issued a statement criticizing the RCMP's involvement, saying it could lead to violence.

Gabriel's home was burned down by protesters in January after he brought in an outside police force to the reserve. He says he is only trying to crack down on crime.
