City approves Sycuan Band agreement for hotel

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation has won approval to build a $30 million hotel and conference center on the San Diego, California, waterfront.
The San Diego city council voted unanimously to accept an agreement with the tribe.
Some changes were made to the agreement affecting the land's possible trust status and future attempts at gaming.
The tribe has to wait until 2040 to seek trust status for the property and must go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs and not Congress. If gaming is sought, the tribe has to gain local approval, including a vote before city residents.
The tribe is planning a 150-room hotel with restaurants, conference facilities and retail stores.
