Yellow Bird: My mother, the great recycler

"My mother never wasted a thing. She is the queen of making do, reusing, recycling.

When I was about 12, I was to appear in some kind of play at the local elementary school. It was the first time I would wear "nylons" as they were called then. She sent my (older) aunt to the store to buy them. I could hardly wait to see and try on my first pair of grown-up nylons. When my aunt got home with the package, I tore into the bag and there was a pair of stockings all right, but they were dark, cotton stockings like old people used to wear. I was stunned and refused to even try them on.

My mother said, "Oh, they won't look so bad. Just wear them. We don't want to waste them. They cost money."
