Yellow Bird: Healing through ceremony
Monday, August 11, 2003

"On Saturday night, after a day on Lake of the Woods, I went with Sandy and Pete Hapka to a sweat lodge ceremony at a reserve in Manitou Rapids, Ont.

That turned out to be a good decision. The hot sweat helped my sore muscles and eased the stiffness of the day's boat ride. I knew my muscles would be stiff because this amateur fisherman didn't ride the waves.

It was an Anishinaabeg sweat done by people from a Canadian reserve. The Hapkas are good friends with these people and are invited to ceremonies such as this regularly. I participate in many ceremonies but probably am most familiar with the Sioux sweat ceremony - the inipi."
