Peace hat returned to Alaska's Tlingit Tribe
Wednesday, July 23, 2003

The Tlingit-Haida Tribe of Alaska held a ceremony Saturday to welcome the return of a Peace Hat given by the Russian government to the Tlingits.

The Peace Hat was given to the Tlingits at the conclusion of peace negotiations in 1804. The Russians and the Tlingits had been warring.

The hat, made of Russian brass, was returned by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
