Tohono O'odham Nation short on housing funds

Even though the Tohono O'odham Nation takes in $50 to $70 million on its casino, few of the dollars reach the tribe's housing department, officials said.
After the state takes a cut and the tribe pays for other programs, there is only $1 million left to share among the reservation's 11 districts, a council member said.
The tribe receives $6 million in federal funding, of which $4 million is used for housing repairs.
But that money isn't enough to meet the need. The tribe has 700 people on the waiting list for new homes. With the average reservation income being $12,000 a year, many do not qualify for federal housing aid, which requires a minimum of $14,000 per year.
