Suit filed over Bustamante's tribal contributions
Friday, September 5, 2003

A California Republican filed suit on Thursday to block Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D) from using millions of dollars in tribal donations.

State Sen. Ross Johnson (R) also filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission, a state board that monitors compliance with election laws. The commission has gone after two tribes to force them to abide by state law.

Three tribes have announced they are spending more than $2 million to support Bustamante, a long-time friend of Indian Country. They are contributing above limits imposed in a new state law because some of the money is going to committees Bustamante created before the law.
