Democrats say Republicans hogging energy bill talks
Friday, September 12, 2003

Democrats who sit on the joint House-Senate conference committee that is supposed to work on the energy bill say they aren't being allowed to work on it.

The bill is lengthy and contains a number of controversial provisions, including one that limits the Department of Interior's liability for the development of trust assets. But Republican leaders are going to make changes to the packages, and then circulate their agreements to Democrats.

The Republicans on the committee include Sens. Pete Domenici (N.M.) and Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Colo.). Both are ardent supporters of the Indian energy title, which seeks to speed up development of Indian lands.
