Norton says DOI computer systems not secure
Thursday, September 18, 2003

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton admitted that the department's computer systems are insecure less than a month after she told a federal judge there were no problems.

In a September 8 report to the Office of Management and Budget, Norton said the computer systems "do not have the necessary security capabilities to facilitate more open access via the Internet." But in an August 11 filing in the Indian trust fund case, the department said the systems "are secure, for purposes of Internet connectivity."

The plaintiffs in the case filed the OMB report to the court yesterday.
