U.S. won't let Shawnee Tribe reclaim property

The federal government says the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma can't reclaim ancestral territory in Kansas because full federal recognition came too late.
The tribe was recognized by an act of Congress in 2000. But in court papers, government lawyers say this was too late to ask the Department of Interior to take the former Sunflower Army Ammunition plant into trust as a former reservation.
The tribe says it once lived on the 9,065-acre property. The tribe was considered part of the Cherokee Nation until recognized separately.
