Interior's top lawyer stepping down next month

Bill Myers, the Department of Interior's top lawyer, is resigning next month.
Myers, a former lobbyist for the cattle and ranching industry, has been nominated by President Bush to serve on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. If confirmed, he would oversee cases affecting Native Hawaiians and tribes in
California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and Alaska.
As head Solicitor, Myers has been providing legal advice to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton for her defense of the trust fund.
He was accused of pressuring trust officials to verify a report that was at the center of Norton's contempt trial.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has not acted on his nomination.
