House leader criticizes Schwarzenegger campaign
Monday, October 6, 2003

The Democratic co-chairman of the Congressional Native American Caucus wrote a letter criticizing Arnold Schwarzenegger for statements he made in California's recall campaign.

In the letter, Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.) said the Republican actor is "unfairly targeting" tribes. "Your uninformed statements demonstrate a lack of knowledge and respect for our country's First Americans," he wrote.

Schwarzenegger says tribes with casinos aren't contributing enough to the state. If elected, he said he will renegotiate compacts to increase the state's share, pointing to Connecticut, where tribes give 25 percent of slot revenues, as a model.

The Congressional Native American Caucus is a bipartisan group of 100 lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives.
