Kennewick Man a topic at archaeology meeting

Kennewick Man, a 9,000-year-old set of remains at the center of a court battle,
was a topic of discussion at a meeting between the Wanapum Band of Washington,
federal employees and researchers.
The tribe is not federally recognized but has laid a claim to the bones. A federal judge ruled that they should not be repatriated because there isn't enough evidence to show they are "Native American."
According to Darby Stapp, project manager for the Hanford Cultural Resources Laboratory in Washington, the remains weren't handled properly by the federal government.
At the meeting, she said tribes should have been consulted earlier about repatriation.
Dave Rice, an archaeologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said Kennewick Man is most likely linked to tribal ancestors who lived 8,000 to 10,000 years ago in the Pacific Northwest.
A group of scientists are suing to be able to study the remains. The case is before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Oral arguments were heard September 10.
