Tribe seeking recognition purges membership rolls

The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut has purged its membership rolls in hopes of bolstering its case for federal recognition.
The tribe dropped 100 people from the list who couldn't document their Indian ancestry, The Hartford Courant reports.
A new list was submitted to a federal court and the Bureau of Indian Affairs late last month.
Ten members of a rival faction were reportedly pressured to join the rolls as well. But 9 have decided they don't want to be a part.
The tribe was denied preliminary recognition in a December 2002 decision.
