Location of Meskwaki Tribe primary in dispute
Monday, October 13, 2003

The Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa is scheduled to hold a primary election tomorrow but there is a dispute over where it will be held.

The elected council wants the vote held at the Bureau of Indian Affairs school. But the BIA says it hasn't been notified of any changes.

The BIA pressured the tribe's elected leaders into holding the recall. A dispute with a rival faction has led to the closing of the tribe's casino.

About 1,000 employees have been out of work since late May. The elected council last week gave "bonus" checks to the employees, who continue to receive unemployment benefits.
