Murkowski won't offer opinion on Native riders
Monday, October 13, 2003
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) met with Alaska Native leaders last week but didn't offer opinions on a legislative rider tribes in the state are opposing.
Murkowski did say she opposed the use of riders because they eliminate "the opportunity for the public process," Independent Native News reported.
She said she will meet with Sen. Ted Stevens (R), who is behind the rider, and representatives of the Alaska Federation of Natives.
Stevens inserted a provision in an appropriations bill that would deny federal funds to tribal justice systems in Alaska. He is working on another rider to prevent villages from receiving housing funds.
