Ecuador's Indians challenge U.S. oil company

A class action suit filed on behalf of 30,000 Indians in Ecuador accuses U.S. oil company ChevronTexaco Corp. of polluting the environment.
The plaintiffs, members of different tribes, say their water has been destroyed by oil drilling.
They want ChevronTexaco to pay for cleanup of their traditional lands, a cost that could exceed $1 billion.
The company denies the charges and fought the lawsuit in the U.S. courts before it was returned to Ecuador, where a trial is underway. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals said it will recognize the results of the Ecuador court's ruling.
