Alaska Natives discuss law enforcement in villages

The Alaska Federation of Natives sponsored a day-long summit on law enforcement on
Wednesday.
Participants voiced concerns about the justice system in rural Alaska. Villages currently rely on
state, federal and tribal programs that don't meet the need, participants said.
The state offers the Village Public Safety Officers, which many Native leaders say is underfunded and has other problems.
Participants are also worried about a push by Sen. Ted Stevens (R) to redirect village tribal court and law enforcement funds to the state or regional organizations.
