Senate committee takes up Lumbee recognition bill

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will take up a bill to recognize the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
The committee held a hearing on October 22 to discuss the tribe's status.
It will review the bill at a business meeting that starts at 10 a.m. today.
Tribal leaders and members are optimistic of their chances for success.
A rival bill in the House would force the tribe to go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs,
from which they are currently barred.
