Anderson faces challenges upon arrival at BIA

Dave Anderson's nomination to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs is stuck somewhere in the Senate but he already has a lot of work waiting for him.
The big issue, of course, is the trust fund debacle. Once confirmed, Anderson would be a named defendant in the Cobell lawsuit, which represents 500,000 Native Americans whose trust assets have been mismanaged for more than a century. At his Senate hearing on October 22, Anderson avoided answering any questions about the case or efforts to fix the broken system.
When Anderson gets to the BIA, he will find himself in the midst of a reorganization that he played no part in developing and which tribes oppose.
With the presidential election coming up in November 2004, he doesn't have much time to present and carry out an agenda.
