Forest Service upholds ban on climbing at sacred site
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

The U.S. Forest Service on November 5 rejected two appeals to its ban on climbing at Cave Rock in Nevada.

In July, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit issued a plan that banned climbing at the rock. Recreational groups appealed the decision but regional Forest Service officials said climbing was incompatible with the need to protect the site.

The Washoe Tribe considers the rock sacred. Only medicine men are allowed to visit the site.
