Commentary: Don't get rid of Chief Illiniwek
Thursday, November 13, 2003
"The U of I mascot is a show of our state's heritage and has never been nor will ever be disrespectful. We believe the Chief honors our state's heritage.
Now, the same thing cannot be said for all Native American mascots.
The big-toothed guy with the huge feather used by the Cleveland Indians baseball team is a long way from Chief Illiniwek.
Further, the Washington Redskins football team might want to seriously consider a name change.
And what of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Boston Celtics?"
