Bank wants court to rule on Meskwaki Tribe's funds

A bank in Iowa won't release any funds to the Meskwaki Tribe until a federal judge says who controls the tribe.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has recognized Homer Bear Jr. and his allies as the legitimate tribal leadership. But the bank, citing a challenge from ousted chairman Alex Walker Jr., says it will wait for a judge before releasing money. The accounts contain funds for tribal programs and services.

The bank isn't the only one reluctant to recognize Bear. The local school administrator, who had aligned himself with Walker, says the election is still in dispute. The school board, appointed by Bear, has fired Joel Longie but he refuses to leave. Sheriff deputies were called to remove him.
