Quapaw Tribe sues companies over mine pollution

The Quapaw Tribe filed suit last week against seven mining companies for polluting Indian lands in northeastern Oklahoma.

The suit seeks money for damages that occurred to Indian land due to lead and zinc mining in Tar Creek. It was filed by John Berrey, chairman of the Quapaw business committee, and seven tribal members who have interests in land where historical mining is said to have occurred.

The suit also seeks money to restore the land in Tar Creek, one of the worst toxic waste sites in the nation. The 40-square mile area is on the federal government's Superfund list.
