Anti-sovereignty group names national director
Thursday, December 18, 2003
A woman who heads the United Property Owners, a notorious anti-tribal sovereignty group, has just been named the national director of One Nation.
Barbara Lindsay says One Nation, based in Oklahoma, is not racist. "I’m one eighth Western Cherokee and my ancestors walked the Trail of Tears," she said in an interview with The Native American Times. "We want to have a good relationship with the tribes. Our differences are with some of the tribal leaders who behave irresponsibly."
United Property Owners got its start in Washington as UPOW.
In the 1970s, UPOW led a massive fight against the fishing rights of several tribes. UPOW members often reacted violently when tribal members tried to exercise their treaty guarantees.
One Nation was formed in Oklahoma by leaders of the petroleum industry who also worked with Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) to kill a bill that would prevent lands owned by members of the Five Civilized Nations from falling out of trust and restricted status.
