Tape catches police making racist comments
Wednesday, January 21, 2004

A newly surfaced videotape captures two Ontario Provincial Police officers making racist comments about Natives during a controversial 1995 protest that ended with the death of a Native man.

One officer makes a reference to a "great big fat **** Indian" while another suggest supplying Natives with alcohol in order to "bait them."

"Creative thinking. ... Works in the (U.S.) South with watermelon," the officers say, according to CBC News.

The two officers were disciplined, CBC News reported. One underwent sensitivity training. The other had a contract that was not renewed.

Members of the Stoney Point First Nation were protesting at Ipperwash Provincial Park when police opened fire on them. Police killed Dudley George. His family settled a wrongful death suit with the police. The new Ontario leadership has announced an inquiry into his death.
