Stevens revises rider denying Native court funding
Monday, December 1, 2003

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has drafted a new version of a rider that denies federal funding to Alaska Native tribal courts and law enforcement.

The new version will deny funding only to villages with less than 25 members and to those located within municipal boroughs. Previously, Stevens sought to deny funding to all Alaska tribes, regardless of size. He now backs a congressional commission that will examine Alaska Native funding mechanisms.

The revised rider will be included as part of an "omnibus" appropriations act that will be considered by the House December 8 and possibly by the Senate in January.
